  • Gilbert Inn Seaside, Oregon 1885

    First built in 1885 as a two-story cabin, the Gilbert Inn was expanded in Queen Anne style in 1892. Its owner was Alexandre Gilbert, a Frenchman who became mayor of Seaside from 1912 to 1916.

    Standing over the west gate, facing St. Aldates Street, Tom Tower is the most recognizable symbol of Christ Church College.

    The central tower dates from the church's original construction in the early 13th century; the two upper stages were added in the 15th century.

    The south tower houses the cathedral's famous bell, "Emmanuel." The bell weighs 13 metric tons (over 28,000 pounds) and its clapper alone weighs 500 kg. Recast in 1631, Emmanuel is the cathedral's oldest bell.

    A gateway in the northeast corner of Tom Quad passes under Fell's Tower, named for Dean John Fell (dean 1660-86) who oversaw the completion of Tom Quad. Both deans are honored with statues on the tower.
