Founded in 1842 and incorporated in 1857, Salem is the capital of Oregon and the third-largest city in the state. Salem retains its historic downtown, contains several historic districts, and has around 70 sites listed on the National Register. Some of its earliest buildings are open to the public at the Willamette Heritage Center.
