    Martin Luther preached the Reformation, got married, and baptized his six children in this twin-towered Gothic church. Inside, Lucas Cranach's huge Reformation Altar includes images of Luther as well as Christ.

  • Bath Abbey Bath, England c. 1500-35

    Formerly a monastery and a cathedral, the spectacular cream-colored Bath Abbey (c. 1500) now serves as the parish church of Bath. The interior is especially famed for its fan vaulting.

  • Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva Rome, Italy

    Said to be Rome's only Gothic church, this 13th-century basilica was built over a temple to Minerva. It contains many art treasures and the venerated tomb of St. Catherine of Siena.
