15th century. Series of rubble-built vaulted undercrofts. Random rubble outer wall with barred windows.

The A Group comprises Batteries, Foog's Gate, Gatehouse, Governor's House, Great Hall, Lang Stairs, Military Prison, National War Museum, New Barracks, Old Guardhouse, Palace Block, Portcullis Gate, St Margaret's Chapel, Scottish National War Memorial, Telephone Kiosks, United Services Museum and Vaults, all within Edinburgh Castle, and in the Care of Historic Scotland. Built onto the rock to provide a level surface for the construction of Crown Square and the surrounding buildings above, the Great Hall, the Palace and the block to SW known as the Queen Anne building (now the United Services Museum). Used at various times as stores, arsenal, bake-house, civil and military prisons and barracks.
