Circa 1850. Flight of 70 ashlar steps, with curved ashlar-coped rubble retaining walls, iron hand-rails and lamp standard on pier to foot, following line of principal medieval access to summit.

The A Group comprises Batteries, Foog's Gate, Gatehouse, Governor's House, Great Hall, Lang Stairs, Military Prison, National War Museum, New Barracks, Old Guardhouse, Palace Block, Portcullis Gate, St Margaret's Chapel, Scottish National War Memorial, Telephone Kiosks, United Services Museum and Vaults, all within Edinburgh Castle, and in the Care of Historic Scotland. The curved rubble wall to W may be the remains of a gatehouse guarding the approach to the summit.
