Ruin, first mentioned 1200 but perhaps on older defensive site. Largely rebuilt 14th cent.; pentagonal curtain wall with rectangular Fore (originally entrance) Tower and parallelogram Sea (with bottle dungeon) and Kitchen Towers. Remodelled early 16th century, circular blockhouses W and E (now demolished) of Fore Tower, new Frontal range with rich entrance gate, reconstruction of Fore and Sea Towers, c.1550. Demolished from 1654.
