The village square was laid out on the axis of the church by Sir Archibald Grant in 1716 the centre of the square forming a cattle pound for Banffshire drovers. The original houses were clay-bound stone thatched with heather. The N.S.A. v XII p.468 describes it as almost entirely rebuilt of late by the proprietor. It was gradually Tudorised by Sir Arthur Grant between 1889 and 1902 Re-categorised as C(S) from B for Group (2006). The listing relates specifically to the group interest of the subject. It applies, as always, to interior as well as exterior, as appropriate to building type.
