House, now flats. c1790-1793. By John Palmer. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, painted to ground floor, ashlar and rubble to rear, artificial slate double pile parapeted roof with two rebuilt brick stacks to right, to rear with early clay pots. Staircase to rear. EXTERIOR: Three storey, single bay three-window range. First floor has three grouped four/four, six/six, four/four sashes, narrower to left and right, with crown glass in splayed reveals, second floor has three similar windows in plain reveals with window guards and continuous stone sill, ground floor has to right two six/six sashes in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill, to left six-panel door with beaded and fielded panels and cast iron lions mask knocker with pennant step and fanlight in round headed plain reveal. Plinth and band course over ground floor continuous with No.10 St James's Street (qv), sill band to first floor and moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet continuous with Nos 10 & 11 St James's Street (qv). Rear elevation partially visible, two six/six sashes to first floor, two two/two sashes to second floor. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: Part of the incomplete St James's Square development on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett and Broom[e] from Sir Peter Rivers Gay 25 March 1790. St James's Street forms one of four diagonal approaches to St James's Square, which together exemplify application of Picturesque principles to town planning.
