SV 91 NW ST MARTIN'S Barn at Little Arthur Farm 1358/2/10004 II

Barn. Mid C19. Coursed granite blocks with ram mortar and worked quoins; gabled pantile roof, the spikes visible in east elevation suggesting the use of thatch originally. Rectangular two-storey plan. West elevation has corrugated iron loft door above central door opening. Timber shutter and platform to left-hand loft door, 2-pane fixed-light window with pigeon hole to left. Three ventilation holes to south gable. Concrete block lean-to with corrugated iron roof added to north gable, on site of earlier livestock enclosure bounded by granite rubble wall. To west is a raised cobbled path, with granite rubble wall on western edge fronting midden. Complete example of a mid C19 field barn, typical of those built in west Cornwall in this period and dramatically sited on land sloping south towards the sea. The best example of its type on the islands, exemplifying as a group the significant agricultural improvements of the period.
