5/218 Memorial to the Battle - of Stamford Hill

Memorial to the Battle of Stamford Hill. Erected in 1713 by Lord Lansdown using a circa late C15 pinnacle re-used from a church tower. Stone rubble and granite. Round-headed granite stone archway set on stone rubble walls. Archway surmounted by crocketted pinnacle on moulded octagonal base. The Battle of Stamford Hill was fought in May 1643 between the Royalist Cornish Army under Sir Ralph Hopton and the Parliamentarians under Major General Chudleigh. The Cornish Army included Sir Bevil Grenville and won the day in spite of being said to have been outnumbered by more than two to one.
