HENDERSKELFE SOUTH PARTERRE SE 7169 Castle Howard 12/65 Statue of Apollo Belvedere and pedestal 25.1.54 approximately 90 metres south-east of Atlas Fountain (formerly listed under "Castle Howard with Outbuilding to east and garden statues") GV II* Statue of Apollo Belvedere and the pedestal on which it stands. Mid C18 statue by John Cheere; pedestal c1720, probably by Nicholas Hawksmoor. Sandstone pedestal, lead statue. Pedestal approximately 2.5 metres in height, statue life size. Square 3-course base carries drum pedestal with moulded base and cornice, and festoons. Heavily decayed statue with its head and one arm missing, supported to rear by iron rod. Copied from a Roman copy of a bronze original by Leochares now in Vatican Museum, Rome. Haskell F and Penny N, Taste and the Antique, 1981, p 148.
