BYLAND WITH WASS MAIN STREET SE 57 NE (north side) Wass 5/22 Water Fountain
GV II
Water fountain. 1870. Cast-iron and limestone ashlar. Trough in U-shaped surround. Trough inscribed HMS 1870, fed by stream of water from carved lion's mouth in 6-course surround. HMS are the initials of Henry Miles Stapylton. The Stapylton family owned the Byland and Wass estate from 1739 to the 1880's.
