SE 58 NE RIEVAULX MAIN STREET (east side) 3/115 Church of St. Mary 4.1.55 - II
Church. 1906 incorporating C13 fabric from previous church on same site. By Temple Moore. Limestone and sandstone ashlar, stone slate roof. Gothic Revival style. Single cell nave and chancel of 5 bays with C20 vestry and tower projecting from north side. West front: C13 masonry to lower half of wall. Central doorway beneath pointed arch with hood-mould flanked by 2 small square windows. Massive diagonal buttress to left, clasping buttress to right. C20 masonry to gable end with 1 window. 2-bay nave with substantial C13 fabric overbuilt in C20. Reset C16 window to north. Tower: 2 stages with angle buttresses, Early English features and broach spire. Chancel: 3-light window with Curvilinear tracery. Pevsner, Yorkshire: The North Riding, 1966.
