SE6052SW MINSTER YARD 1112-1/27/716 Column approx 4 metres north-east of 24/06/83 No.9 (Formerly Listed as: MINSTER YARD Roman column at front of No.9)

GV II

Column from the north-east colonnade of the Roman headquarters building. Originally constructed c100 AD by Legion IX, re-assembled and re-used by Legion VI in C4; erected in present location 1971. Gritstone. Cylindrical column approximately 9.5 metres high, with moulded base and damaged moulded capital, raised on square plinth. The column was excavated from beneath York Minster (qv) in 1969 and given to the City of York to mark the 1900th anniversary of its foundation c71 AD.
