SAWLEY FOUNTAINS ROAD SE 26 NE (north side, off)
5/129 Rough House, also called Ruffe House, with 6.3.67 flanking walls
- II
Folly, now house. Late C18, probably for William Aislabie of Studley Royal, C20 conversion. Mortared rubble, C20 pantile roof. South-west facade: C20 central door and flanking windows fill 3 large Gothick-arched openings, possibly an imitation arcade. Flanking walls with arches set back to left and right. House: the central arch has a crudely cut bearded face on the keystone. Raised crow-stepped verges, two C20 dormer windows, end stacks. Rear: central door, small circular windows. Left and right returns: projecting stones, blocked arched and circular openings and stepped gables give a ruined appearance when viewed from a distance. Although it appears to face south-west the building was probably erected as a viewpoint over Studley Royal and Fountains. The style is similar to other structures on that estate, eg Rough Bridge (Lindrick with Studley Royal and Fountains, qv) and Duck House (Studley Roger, qv). The name 'Rough' may describe the C18 Gothick use of crudely-dressed stone which contrasted with the smooth finish of classical buildings.
