GV II

Pair of offices with ground-floor shops. 1955-57 by Erno Goldfinger. Reinforced concrete frame with projecting steel- framed oriels, clad in portland stone vitrolite. Six storeys. 4 Bays wide on rectangular site. Frame expressed on main elevation, noted for its set-back and projecting planes. High cornice over recessed eaves. Each window is of three vertical planes with set- back toplights, over vitrolite panels. Central bays on second and fourth floors project on steel girders without toplights and glazed returns. Offices reached via recessed entrances at either side of building with shopfronts between, that to No.45 altered. Goldfinger also designed the shopfittings for No.46 and its firescreen survives. Recognised as Goldfinger's most important office building, it is the first building in mature style that he was to develop further in his later housing for the London County Council.
