Large terraced 1st rate town houses. 1770-76 by Robert and James Adam (No. 18 built by John Hobcroft) as a speculative development on the Portland Estate. Stock brick with channelled stucco ground floors except for No. 20 and No. 18 entirely stuccoed; concealed slate roofs. Generally uniform row with generously proportioned astylar elevations. (No. 22 slightly advanced.) 4 storeys (top floor as attic storey) on basements. 4-window wide fronts. No. 16 has architraved doorway with pediment on consoles set in front of shallow 2 storey canted bay (added probably during early C.20 alterations). No. 18 has Roman Doric column doorway with triglyph frieze and mutule cornice; double panelled doors with guilloche mouldings in panelled reveals, fluted doorhead carried out as impost moulding to fanlight arch. No. 20 has shallow porch in 2nd bay from left with fluted columns and wall pilasters of the Tower of the Winds order, festooned urn frieze and cornice; double panelled door, fluted doorhead and plain fanlight. No. 22 has engaged Tower of the Winds order, festooned urn frieze and cornice; double panelled door, fluted doorhead and plain fanlight. No. 22 has engaged Tower of the Winds column doorway with swag and rounded head frieze to entablature; panelled door in panelled pilaster surround, fluted doorhead and Vitruvian scroll imposts and patterned fanlight. The entrance to No. 82 New Cavendish Street has fluted pilaster Tower of the Winds order doorway with rosette studded frieze to entablature. Recessed sashes, under flat gauged arches to upper floors, No. 18 with shallow architraves to ground and 1st floor windows, the latter with cornices on consoles. 1st floor stucco plat band and sill band; cornice over 2nd floor and attic cornice with blocking course. Full height shallow canted bay and bow to return of No. 16. Anthemion pattern cast iron balconettes to 1st floor of No. 20. No. 18 retains flambé urn finialed area railings, the rest with Plumbed spike finial railings. Fine Adam interiors with top lit stone geometrical staircases with wrought iron balustrades, delicate plasterwork friezes, ceilings and wall medallions, inset painted panels to ceilings, statuary marble chimneypieces, etc. No. 16 with good neo-Adam pre 1st World War refurbishing and elaboration to 1st floor and again with the main staircase renewed in Adam manner on D plan by Lord Gerald Wellesley 1928-30. No. 26 was the residence of Charles, 3rd Earl of Stanhope.
