TQ 3080 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER ST. MARTIN'S LANE, WC2 72/129 Nos. 1 to 4 consec. 24.2.58 (St. Martin in the Fields Secondary School.) (Formerly listed under St Martin's Place) G.V. II* Former National School. 1827-30 by G.Ledwell Taylor but no doubt to a design by John Nash. Stucco, slate roof. Elegant Ionic design; part of Nash's isolation of St. Martin's and the Strand Improvements. 3 storeys. 7 windows wide south front. 2 window wide return to Adelaide Street with plain square headed doorway. Rusticated podium - ground floor. Recessed glazing bar windows to ground floor with flat, voussoired and keystoned arches. Main floor with archivolt arched windows with moulded imposts, small square 2nd floor windows; both storeys articulated by giant fluted Ionic pilasters, coupled flanking end bays, rising from plat band and carrying entablature with dentil cornice and blocking course. 2 window return with similar treatment. The frieze of entablature is inscribed in fine lettering "St. Martin's National Schools". Part of St. Martin's Parochial Buildings, a typically varied Nash composition. Survey of London; Vol. XX.
