GV II

Cinerary urn, now garden ornament. Roman, probably Cl AD, restored C20 or earlier. White marble. Plinth with moulded base and cornice, the sides having paired masks in relief and hanging leafy branches. The cinerary urn has a fluted and gadrooned stem (restored), the straight sides have birds and fruit in shallow relief and a cartouche with inscription: "DIS MANIBUS / S ACRUM / Q MINUCLVS FELIX". The lid has a weathered acorn-type finial. Probably part of the Roman treasures brought to England by William Weddell in 1765. The plinth is separate and may have been for a statue.
