SO5039NE BROAD STREET 683-1/2/69 (East side) Post Office and attached railings
GV II
Post Office. c1881. Ashlar; Welsh slate roof with gable parapets and gables to front and left; ashlar twin stacks with moulded caps; ashlar and brick stack, to rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and basement; 2-window range: in advanced bay to left, mullion and transom window, with 3 plain sashes and coloured leaded lights over, under dated tablet and drip course; to right, similar oriel cross-window, with Royal Arms over; ornamented gables with finials; louvred cote with finial. Entrance to right: steps to C20 door and screen, recessed under moulded semicircular arch with drip course and enriched springers; to left, paired cross-windows with Corinthian pilasters to moulded architraves; string course and interrupted frieze, overall. Left returned side: 2 tiers of cross-windows under twin gables; cast-iron gate and railings, to porch bay with 6-panel door and mullioned overlight. INTERIOR: dogleg staircase with cast-iron balusters and moulded rail. 1st floor: architraves to windows and doors; skirting; ceiling cornices. Ground floor: architraves to windows; hidden ceiling cornice. Cellar: brick-lined; brick and flagstone floors; brick vault; masonry to front wall; 4-panel doors.
