GV II*

Wall and railings, gate and gate piers. Early C18; railings c1970, reproducing original railings of same design. For Sir William Strickland. Wall and gate piers of ashlar; wrought iron gate, railings and overthrow. Wall approx 0.5m high, with cambered coping, terminated at each end by square pier, with moulded cornice and pyramidal cap. Gate piers are square on plan with rebated angles, of banded rustication, with moulded cornices, stepped caps and ball and pedestal finials, the ball enclosed in band of vermiculated rustication. Pedestrian gate and screen of rinceaux, scrolls and reversed wheatear drops, and alternately twisted and wavy finials. Railings similar, between square section open-work columns with twisted finials. Overthrow of intertwined foliage encloses 'WS' monogram and the motto 'VINCE MALUM BONO', motto of the Eure family. Wrought ironwork probably symbolises the marriage between Sir William Strickland and Elizabeth Palmes, daughter of Mary Palmes, nee Eure.
