GV II

Row of 8 shops, now 6 shops and 2 offices. Early-mid C19, with later alteration. Painted brick on painted stone plinth. Overhanging pent roof of slate on shaped brackets, hipped and curved on plan at right end; left end altered; 4 brick stacks. Each shop consists of a single bay. 1-storey 8-bay range, with round-arched passage doorway between Nos 10 & 12. Passage doorway contains round-headed plank and batten door in raised surround. Shop fronts consist of door to left of shop window over brick riser. Original doors were plank and batten, and are retained throughout, except in Nos 6 & 16. Original windows were of 15 square panes and set back to accommodate shutters, as in Nos 2, 6, 8, 12 & 14. A continuous louvred ventilation grille runs across the heads of windows and doors; most have been boarded over but open ones survive in Nos 2, 8, 10 & 12. Shop front to No.2 returns at right end, on Market Place, with C20 cross window beneath louvred ventilation grille. Overhanging roof forms continuous canopy over shop fronts. INTERIOR: each shop originally had small plain fireplace with shelf, against the rear wall. Together, Nos 1-15 (qv) and 2-16 The Shambles constitute an interesting example of a planned thoroughfare, laid out to link the Market Place with the newly opened Cattle Market. The shops are said to have been butchers' shops. (Hudleston N A: History of Malton and Norton: Scarborough: 1962-: 189-90).
