House, later The St Edmund's Hotel; incorporated as part of the Angel Hotel in 1963. c1814, as indicated by a rate book entry; on an earlier site. White brick and slates. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. 5 window range: small-paned sashes in deep reveals to the 1st and 2nd storeys, sashes without glazing-bars to the ground storey. A continuous brick band runs between the 1st and 2nd storeys with a stone torus-moulded band above it. At 1st storey level is a continuous cast-iron balcony with Greek key ornament to the railings. The entrance door has a Greek Ionic surround with plain columns and a heavy entablature. INTERIOR: the principal upper room has a fine original fireplace surround, with little free-standing Greek Ionic columns supporting the projecting ends of the dentilled lintel, which has applied motifs, including roundels and swags. It is identical in style to the fireplace on the upper floor of the Market Cross (qv).
