Country house. 1762-67. By John Carr of York for Sir Marmaduke Wyvill. Ashlar sandstone, Westmorland slate roof. Palladian style. 2 storeys and basement, 1:3:1 bays, the central 3 bays recessed behind a slightly- projecting portico of 4 giant Ionic unfluted columns, approached by an imperial staircase of 2 lower flights and 1 upper flight, carried on a ¼ arch with Gibbs surround, and with turned balusters. Plinth. Basement windows: 6-pane sashes in Gibbs surrounds in first, second, fourth and fifth bays. Ground-floor string and sill band, containing balustraded aprons to sash windows with glazing bars in architraves with pulvinated friezes and pediments carried on consoles in first and fifth bays. Central part-glazed leaved door in architrave with pulvinated frieze and pediment on consoles. Sash windows with glazing bars in architraves with pulvinated friezes and segmental pediments in second and fourth bays. First floor: 9-pane unequally-hung sash windows in architraves. Modillion cornice. Hipped roofs on 4 sides of the building around the stair-well, and with stacks on inner edges. Rear: 2:3:2 bays. Plinth. Central section slightly proud, with central canted bay. Basement: 6-pane sash windows. Ground floor: sash windows with glazing bars, round-arched with radial glazing bars in central 3 bays. First floor: 9-pane unequally-hung sash windows. Modillion cornice. Right return: 2:3:2 bays. Plinth. Basement: 6-pane sash windows in Gibbs surrounds. Ground-floor band and sill band. Ground floor: sash windows with glazing bars in architraves with pulvinated friezes and cornices. First floor: 9-pane unequally-hung sash windows in architraves. Modillion cornice. Left return: 2:3:2 bays, the central 3 slightly proud. Windows with keyed lintels, 6-pane sashes in basement; sashes with glazing bars on ground floor and 9-pane unequally-hung sashes on first floor. In centre of ground floor, door of 8 fielded panels in architrave with plain frieze add cornice. Moulded cornice. Chimney stacks between second and third, fifth and sixth bays. Interior: entrance hall with doors of 6 fielded panels; pulvinated friezes above doorcases; fireplace with console pilasters, dentil ceiling cornice. Central stair hall with cantilevered ashlar treads and wrought-iron balustrade to open well staircase top-lit by lunette windows in groin-vaulted openings; modillion cornice underneath landings. To right of entrance hall, library: fireplace with fluted pilasters, Greek key motif on frieze; acanthus ceiling cornice. Behind, morning room: Greek key motif on friezes above doors; dentil ceiling cornice. Behind, large drawing room: fireplace with console pilasters and frieze with drapes; anthemion on friezes above doors and ceiling cornice. In centre of rear, dining room with bay window: plastered wall panels; crossed fronds on friezes above doors; acanthus ceiling cornice. To rear left, oak room, containing panelling said to be from older house on site, some of Jacobean type, some with large fielded panels. First floor: main bedroom over dining room with Ionic columns framing bed recess; dentil cornice. The house is a delightful Palladian villa, and all its John Carr interior details survive complete.
