9/43 Garden Walls

GV II

Walls to former kitchen gardens. Probably late C18 - early C19. For the Duke of Leeds of Hornby Castle (qv). Orange-red bricks in English garden wall bond, coursed rubble and ashlar. Rectangular plan inner garden within larger irregularly-shaped walled area. Inner garden: brick on both sides of wall. North and south walls in alternating recessed and projecting bays, the projecting bays formerly heated. Blocked round-arched doorway in west side, wall broken through on west side. East and west walls ramped up towards north side. Stone slab coping. Lean-to bothy behind north wall. Outer wall: rubble on outer sides of walls, with quoins on outer angles. Stepped pilaster buttresses both inside and out with ashlar rolled coping to offsets, and pyramidal caps. Stone slab coping, ramped up to north and west, with pyramidal caps on steps. In south-east corner, board door in ashlar chamfered 4-centred arched doorway with hoodmould. In north-east corner, ashlar chamfered segmental-arched carriageway with leaved board doors.
