WINTERBOURNE STOKE VILLAGE CENTRE SU 04 SE 4/274 Upper Close

GV II House in own grounds. Early C19. Smooth rendering, painted; slate low-pitched roof with lead hips and dressings. A large compact square block with asymmetrically placed projecting wing to south, towards the church; a one storey painted brick unit to the north returns with a hipped end to enclose a small paired service court- yard. Entrance front, 3 two storeys, 3 windows: at ground floor 2 large 25-pane sashes flank a projecting porch with 'tent' roof, panelled door to fanlight in pilasters and on four steps, pilasters frame front and returns of porch. At first floor a central 16-pane sash flanked by 12-pane sashes. Right return had projecting wing with canted bay with horizontal bar fenestration below a 12-pane sash and to its right are 2 French doors below two 12-pane sashes. Left return has varied fenestration including 4 sashes and a 6-panel door. The stack is external on this front, raised in brick; two further brick stacks at eaves. Deep projecting eaves with plain soffit. Ground floor windows have panelled shutters, interior not inspected. A grand house, unchanged externally except for French doors to south.
