SU 73 NW CHAWTON WINCHESTER ROAD

2/11 Bakehouse and Stables 20 metres North of Jane Austen's house

G.V. II

A range of buildings, bounding the rear courtyard, of L-shape. Early C19. Mainly brick walls in Flemish bond, but some boarding. Plain tiled roof. A single-storeyed irregular group, in one block: at one end the bakehouse/ laundry, a hay-store, then a taller corner (coachhouse?) block, and a longer lower arm (stables) which ends as a gable facing the roadway. Casements. Plain doors. The interior of the bakehouse has a large oven and (clothes) boiler. Note: The extent of this range, together with the size of the house, suggests that it might have been an inn.
