TQ 2881 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER DUCHESS MEWS, W1 45/72 15.6.73 No. 21 G.V. II Mews building. c.1775-76 (some C.20 alterations) by James Adam associated with No. 21 Portland Place q,v. Stock brick altered mews front; stuccoed "polite" east front vis-a-vis rear of Portland Place house; slate roof. 2 storeys and basement. 5 windows wide, the centre bay slightly advanced and pedimented. Exposed brick basement has wide segmental gauged brick arch. Ground floor partly obscured by C.20 additions has blind semicircular archway recessed for 2 orders to advanced centre flanked by empty niches. The imposts of arch are extended into frieze with fluting and rosette enrichments; above the frieze 2 circular Coade stone medallions with mythological scenes in relief and, to left and right, rectangular panels with double swag motif. 1st floor has 3 recessed casement windows alternating with 2 blocked up window openings. Moulded cornice and parapet with coping and pedimented centre bay.
