GV II

Pair of houses, right latterly a shop. Late C17 or early C18 and early to mid-C19; later additions and alterations. Church Cottage. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; stone slate roof with artificial slates to rear. Possible 3-unit baffle-entry plan, said formerly to have been 2 cottages, which may also have been the original arrangement. 2 storeys and attic. 4 casements with wood lintels directly below eaves and 3 to ground floor, one to either side of boarded door to left and one to right of C20 lean-to porch, all early C19 except C20 window above porch. 2 gabled dormers in roof slope. Truncated integral end stack to left, ridge stack to left of porch and integral end stack abutting end stack of Ferryman's House. C19 lean-to with boarded door to front attached to left gable end. Ferryman's House. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; slate roofs. 2 sections, left and lower with 2 glazing bar sashes on each floor, horned to ground floor, and right with 2-storey canted bay window (4-paned sash on each floor) to right and glazing bar sash above 6-panel door with semi-circular fanlight to left, both door and window in plain stone surrounds. Integral end stacks to lower section and integral ashlar end stack with dripstone and moulded capping to right of upper section. Interior. Church Cottage only inspected. Chamfered spine beams and joists in 2 ground-floor rooms to ieft of ridge stack and in room to right, beam in middle room with stepped ogee stops. Ridge stack has inglenook fireplace with chamfered wood lintel and infilled inglenook fireplace to right stack. Oak winder staircase from ground to first floor to right of ridge stack and another from first floor to attic to right of right stack. Chamfered spine beams and joists to first-floor rooms. Attic has double butt-purlin roof in 2 bays to each side of ridge stack, left truss with collar. C19 single-storey service ranges and C20 additions to rear are not of special architectural interest.
