TG 2308 NE THE CLOSE 17/215 26.2.54 Nos. 51 to 55 (consec.) GV II* Former granary and granarians house, now divided into houses. C13 arcading rear of No. 55 C15 onwards rebuilding and alterations. Long range set back from street line. No 51:- Flint with brick dressings. 3 storeys. 3 irregularly spaced 2nd floor windows. C19 single-storey addition to right. Left-hand off-centre door with Doric surround. Sash windows throughout with glazing bars. Central triangular dormer gable with 3-light casement. Large fireplace on east gable with stone jambs. No. 52:- 2 storey plus semi-basement. 3 bays. Flint with red brick window surrounds and blocking pantile roof. Central 2-leaf door, 8 steps up. Porch supported on 2 Tuscan columns and pilasters. Flat hood with mutules. French doors to basement. Sash windows throughout with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. Box cornice. No. 53:- Late C19 rebuild. Flint with stone window surrounds: Plain tiles. 3 storeys. 4 large first-floor windows. Right-hand off-centre 'Tudor' door with 3-light casement above. Plain door at extreme left with 3-light fanlight. 5-light mullion and transom window to the right of central door and 2 2-light and one single-light window to the left. 2 4-light and 2 central 3-light windows at first floor. Central sun-dial. Box cornice. 2 dormers with 3-light casements. Nos. 54 and 55:- Flint with brick dressings. Pantile roof. 3 storeys. Scattered fenestration. No. 54 has central door with flanking sash windows. No. 55 has central door with sunk panel pilasters and plain architrave and hood. 4-light and 3-light flanking casement windows. 3 dormers with 3-light casement windows. Massive roughly-cut ceiling beams. Roof with single butt-purlings shouldered on to the principal rafters with the mouldings turning accordingly. Arch braces springing from wall posts set into the wall.
