South part of No 11 [The Old Cottage] SU 8446 7/122 26.4.50.
II GV
- C16 restored. 2 storey. Brick with upper part of timber frame and plaster infilling. Old tile roof. Small central gable with carved and moulded bargeboards and inverted central pierced finial, embracing small angular bay, 5-light, 2-tier mullioned transomed lead casements with carved wood cill, moulded transome, carved and bracketted head rail under small secondary gable with similar bargeboards and finial to main gable; the base of the secondary gable is rectangular, and the angular bay probably a restoration of former rectangular bay window. The bay window flanked by 2 small 2-light leaded casement, and 2 additional similar casements on 1st floor; carved bracket support to bay. 2 larger casements to right hand on ground floor, formerly with plain shutters; plain ledged door to left hand. Return end to south has tile gable. Large chimney of 4 square shafts. (Illustrated "Country Life", July 3rd 1942, Plates 10 and 11).
The listed buildings in Bridge Square, Firgrove Hill (West Side), Red Lion Lane (North West Side) and Nos 57 and 59 Abbey Street, form a group.
