  • Selby Abbey Selby, England 1069

    According to tradition, Selby Abbey was the earliest Benedictine monastery in the north of England, founded in 1069. Today it is a Grade-I listed parish church featuring Norman and Decorated Gothic architecture and 14C stained glass.

    Mid C19. Red brick. Two storeys. Moulded modillion eaves cornice. Coped gables on elaborate moulded stone kneelers. Continuous sill bands. Eight paired round-arched sashes with moulded keystones, and one group of three in centre, on first floor.

    Mid C19. Whitewashed brick. Pitched slate roof. Threestoreys. Brick modillion eaves cornice. Three bays: sashes with gadrooned keystones.

    Late C18 or early C19. Brown brick. Pitched pantile roof. Coped gables. Two storeys. Two bays, each set in a giant relieving arch: plain stone impost band: blind oculi in spandrels. Yorkshire casements with glazing bars.

  • The Market Cross Selby, England

    Dated 1775 on a modern plaque attached to the plinth. Dated 1790 by Pevsner. Style suggests 3rd quarter of C18. Stood in Market Place until replaced by a flower bed in 1975.
