John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church and Cemetery is locally significant as the lone built representation of the first decades of the African-American settlement at West Warm Springs in Bath County, Virginia. Established after the Civil War, this community was home to many who had traveled to the area to work at The Homestead in Hot Springs, other local springs hotels, the Warm Springs pools, and a variety of associated support occupations for the resort industry. The church was the first religious building in the community for African Americans.
