    Brick wall of C18 or earlier date containing a series of stone heraldic cartouches. The 4 cartouches are late C17 and are probably by Robert Grumbold. They are the arms of Nevile (twice). Saclter and Babington.

    Built in 122 under the Emperor Hadrian, this fortified wall stretched for 80 Roman miles across northern Britain. Much of it still remains.

    The Roman Walls of Le Mans are the third largest surviving Roman city walls, exceeded only by Rome and Istanbul. Dating from 280 or 320-60 CE, they feature intriguing geometric decorations and multiple towers.
