Entered via a magnificent Norman portal of the 12th century, carved with zigzag molding, the Early English chapter house dates from the early 13th century.

The Chapter House, where monks met daily to discuss the business of the monastery, extends off the east walk of the cloisters. In a departure from the octagonal plan of most chapter houses, it is large and rectangular.
