"Head and foot from a figure of Christ / Devotional images were banned by Church reformers in England in the 1530s. Images of Christ were among the last to be outlawed. These fragments from a figure of Christ are a remarkable survival. Though incomplete they still express the grim brutality of the Crucifixion. They were found in the wall of All Hallows Church, South Cerney, Gloucestershire, where they were probably hiddent o escape destruction. / About 1130 / England / Wood, gesso, pigment...
