Larkin House Monterey, Monterey County, California, USA
Description
Completed in 1837, this structure marks a turning point in the development of California adobe buildings and is acknowledged as the prototype for the Monterey Colonial style. Thomas O. Larkin, originally from New England, used a familiar Massachusetts model as the basis for its design: a timber frame supports the upper story, permiting a lighter shell of adobe blocks and a greater freedom in fenestration than would be possible where the adobe material predominates structurally.
