Raised garden with moat known as Queen Mary's Bower and said to be on the site of an ancient earthwork. C16, restored early C19 by Wyatville. Coursed squared sandstone and ashlar. Square in plan. Featureless walls enclosing a raised garden.

Aqueduct
Chatsworth, England
Aqueduct. c1840 by Paxton and Holmes. Based on an aqueduct seen by the Sixth Duke of Devonshire at Wilhelmshohe, near Kassel. Roughly squared sandstone, of drystone construction. Impressively sited on the hillside.

Summer House. 1839, probably by Paxton & Robertson. Saracenic style. Sandstone ashlar and Aberdeen granite. Roof hidden behind parapet. Rectangular plan.

Swiss Cottage

Cottage. 1839, probably by Paxton and Robertson. Coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings. Stone slate roof, the slates of diamond shape. Two ashlar stacks. Deeply overhanging on elaborate bracketed eaves with decorative valancing.

Fountain. Originally of 1693, but replaced by a larger version c1830 by Paxton & Holmes, the work executed by Bowers of Chesterfield. Sandstone boulders and copper. Roughly circular base of irregularly laid drystone boulders.

The Hunting Tower

Look-out or hunting tower, also known as The Stand. c1582, possibly by Robert Smythson. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings. Lead roofs. Square in plan with circular angle turrets. Three storeys, the turrets rising to four storeys.

Retaining Walls and Steps Surrounding Site of Great Conservatory

Retaining walls and steps around the large sunken area created for the demolished Great Conservatory. 1836-40 by Joseph Paxton. Coursed squared sandstone and ashlar. Large rectangular area with low retaining walls with flat copings.

The Conservative Wall

Greenhouse. Built c1832 as a forcing wall, by Paxton and Robertson and made into a greenhouse in 1848-50 by Paxton. Sandstone ashlar, timber and glass.

Game larder, now disused. 1909, possibly by Romaine-Walker. Sandstone ashlar. Octagonal in plan. Moulded plinth, architrave and cornice. Blocking course. Moulded segmental pediment to south west.

Doric Column and Bust of Sixth Duke

Column and bust. Erected c1840. Ancient fluted marble column form Minerva Sunnias, set on a square sandstone base. Surmounted by a bust of the Sixth Duke of Devonshire carved by Campbell in c1820.
