Vincent van Gogh 1853 - 1890
Zelfportret 1887 - 1888
Self-portrait
olieverf op doek / oil on canvas
Van Gogh made this self-portrait in the winter of 1887-1888, when he had been living in Paris for almost two years. The work shows that he had studied the stippled technique of the pointillists, which he then applied in his own highly original way. The directions of the brushstrokes follow the outline of his head, thereby creating a kind of halo around it.
