Gilded Chrismatory

Museum label: "Chrismatories contain the holy oils used in baptism, confirmation and the last rites. Consequently they usually have three compartments. This elaborate example demonstrates the value placed upon the holy oil and the sacraments. It is ornately decorated with filigree and semi-precious stones and given an architectural shapel. / About 1230 / Meuse valley, modern-day Belgium or Germany / Gilt copper-alloy, gemstones / PE 1923.1205.7 / Bequeathed by C.
