Saturday evening after Glastonbury we headed for Sherborne, for no other reason than they had a big, nice church and it was on the way to Weymouth. I had written an article on Sherborne Abbey Church for Sacred Destinations, so I thought it would be nice to check it out and get some pics.
Alas, the church was closed. But we looked at the outside and had a nice walk through town. Sherborne turned out to be one of the most pleasant English towns we've visited, and we had a good time window shopping and people-watching. We even came across another nice church, a Methodist one called "Cheap Street Church."
Sherborne has done a far better job than most historic cities (including Oxford) at retaining most of the charm of the high street despite the modern stores. Even their Boots (the British equivalent of Rite Aid) looked quite lovely.
We stopped in the Edinburgh Woolen Mill store (a big chain, but nice) to get David a hat, and all the other customers seemed to be grandmas buying wool sweaters for grandpas. It was fabulous. They also had a lovely Aveda store, which was a friendly slice of home.
We had a late lunch/early dinner at Sherborne in the Cross Keys Pub. The pub was smoky and busy, but we found a nice side room that was quiet and non-smoking, and had a decent pub meal. I had a California Chicken Sandwich that was actually quite good - chicken, cheese, and pineapple on open-faced, soft French bread. With chips, of course. David had a Fisherman's Platter, which was basically just frozen breaded seafood heated up, but not bad. It had been a long time since breakfast, so it was just what we needed. Around 5:30-ish we hopped back in the car and headed further south to Weymouth.
