The Blue Virgin Window (French: Notre Dame de la Belle Verrière, “Our Lady of the Beautiful Window”) is one of the oldest and most famous stained glass windows in Chartres Cathedral. Its central panels date from the mid-12th century.
Description
The Blue Virgin Window (French: Notre Dame de la Belle Verrière, "Our Lady of the Beautiful Window") is located in the south ambulatory aisle of Chartres Cathedral.
The central four panels are the oldest, dating from the mid-12th century. The depict the Virgin Mary, crowned and serene, with the Christ Child on her knee and a large dove descending above. Her robes and halo are a rich blue set against a ruby-red background.
The surrounding panels, depicting censing angels, date from the 13th century. The bottom panels, of the same date, show the Wedding at Cana and Temptations of Christ.
