BROUGHTON WEST THE SQUARE (north-west side) SD 2187 Broughton-in-Furness 23/63 The Square Cafe, Hillside and Aitken douse G.V. II
3 houses, one now part cafe. Probably c1760. Far Gilpin Sawrey. Roughcast stone with slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays, but 5th bay of 3 storeys. Windows are monstly sashed, some with vertical glazing bars; ground fluor has casement window to 1st bay and bay window with hipped roof to 2nd bay. Entrance to The Square Cafe up steps with lean-to canopy, basement entrance to left. Entrances have half-glazed doors. Gable-end stacks and 2 cross-axial stacks. The Square Cafe has stair with Chinese pattern balustrade and 2-panel doors with some H-L hinges. Built as part of planned town square, an unusual feature in a Cumbrian village.
