9/74 Wensley Bridge 13/2/67 - II

Bridge. C15, C18, early C19. Coursed stone and ashlar. 4 arches. On downstream side, central 2 arches are pointed, and perhaps of C15 date, with 2 chamfered orders. To the south on this side, an C18 segmental arch with ashlar voussoirs and chamfered archivolt. To the north an early C19 semicircular ashlar arch. Cutwaters are triangular in plan, with concave- chamfered tops. On the upstream side, all 4 arches are of the early C19, semicircular with voussoirs, plain archivolts, and stepped triangular cutwaters. On both sides, early C19 parapets terminating in circular capstan-like bollards, all with horizontal tooling. According to Leland, the bridge was built before 1436 by Alwyne, rector of Wensley. It was widened in 1818. Scheduled as an Ancient Monument. Bulmer, History, Topography and Directory of North Yorkshire (1890), p. 619.
