SP 90 SW CHARTRIDGE CHESHAM ROAD, (south side) Hyde Heath 5/39 Hawthorn Farmhouse -
GV II
House. C17, flint with red brick quoins and dressings. Large hipped roof of old tiles, flanking stacks with brick arcading two hipped dormers to west, three modern dormers east, moulded wooden cornice. Two storeys and attic raised on semi-basement. Moulded brick first floor band, brick plinth. Central modern porch on west, half-level old leaded oak framed windows in staircase above, 2-light breaking into floorband, 3-light under eaves. 3-light leaded window each side on both main floors, apparently reduced in height. Brick relieving arches above band course. South elevation similar with modern casements in old openings. East elevation has central steps to pair of half-glazed doors in brick opening with large carved stone scrolls each side, canopy missing, dated tile above opening (1632 or 52?). Lower wing added to north side, also flint and brick with old tiled roof hipped at north end. Interior: Very fine original dog-leg staircase with circular newels having finials and pendants, moulded handrail and large circular balusters. Moulded fireplace surround in kitchen. Other interiors not seen.
