MULLION MULLION SW 61 NE 5/85 Parc Venton II* House, circa 1820s. Built for Commander Drew RN, Customs and Excise Officer. Stuccoed stone with some cob on interior. Slurried slate roof and rendered chimney. Square in plan with central open staircase. 2½-storeys. Symmetrical. Three 2- storey recessed bays in main elevation (north-east), terminating in 4-centred arches above first floor windows. Original fenestration in part. Ground floor: 2 rectangular later casement windows with glazing bars and with original margin glazing bars in rectangular fanlight above and fielded panels below. Central fielded panelled double door in central recessed bay. Directly above ground floor openings three 4-centred headed fanlights with intersecting glazing bars, over later casement windows with glazing bars and fielded and panelled shutters below. On south-east elevation, the recessed bays continue rhythm. The ground floor third bay and first floor first and third bays are blind. Fenestration of second bay same as main elevation. Insertion of C20 window with glazing bars in ground floor first bay. Blind recessed bays continue on north west elevation, partly blocked by later C20 garage. Hipped slate roof with deep eaves and pantiled roof in centre on rendered plinth above. The plinth rendering supercedes an earlier arrangement of unknown design, possibly balustrading or clerestory. Central chimney stack at apex. Rooms of interior arranged around elegant, elongated kidney-shaped spiral staircase. The stairwell and rooms have good interiors. Rooms open onto landings and the staircase. Internal walls: semicircular, curving inwards at cornices. Repeated curves on walls flanking windows. Moulded cornices. 3 panelled doors and fenestration with lambs tongue on interior largely unchanged. Fireplaces replaced. Decorative plasterwork on first floor with gothick detailing including pointed relieving arches over windows together with vaulting ribs terminating in oak leaves and elegant elongated pilasters and columns. Tripartite arched and moulded screen in first floor room.
