BARDNEY ABBEY ROAD TF 17 SW (west side) Birch Tree 5/6 Farmhouse (formerly 30.11.66 listed as Abbey Farmhouse)

Farm house. C15, C20. Timber frame, wattle and daub with painted plaster, some painted red brick. Thatched roof with 4 dormers, 2 on west front, one a casement the other a sliding sash; 2 on east front, one a casement, the other a sliding sash. Single gable stack, single ridge stack. Long catslide to north. Single storey and attic, 4 bay front with lobby entrance. West side with doorway to left with thatch and log porch, and partially glazed door. C20 casement to left. 2 sliding sashes to right, both with wooden lintels. East side with doorway to right with plank door and small fixed C20 window immediately to left with sliding sash beyond. Very small fixed window to right C20 brick south wall with C20 fenestration. Complete 4 bay timber frame inside with very large, broad posts, curved braces and large wall plates. C15 roof completely intact with tie beams partially encased where upper floor inserted just below, tenoned collars, ridge beam, unusual overlapping staggered purlins and rafters. Originally farmhouse belonged to Bardney Abbey. (Several fragments of C12 moulded responds in garden.)
