Founded by Nannie Helen Burroughs in 1909, the School offered a unique combination of educational opportunities for young Black women and girls. This was the first institution in American history to offer all these opportunities within a single school.

This was the first permanent headquarters for the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC). Founded in 1890, GFWC moved to this building in 1922, when it became involved in conservation projects and community programs.
