GLASTONBURY HIGH STREET ST 5038 (A39) (north side) 8/229 Post Office and Archway GV II Post office with attached entrance archway. 1938. Bath stone ashlar with tile roof. Late medieval style. Two storeys, three bays. Ground floor has square headed plank doors flanking paired 3 light mullion and transom windows with hood- mould and central traceried panel. Above 2 light mullion and transom windows flank 5 light mullion and transom canted oriel. Parapet with string. Steeply pitched plain tile roof with verges. Some alterations and additions at rear but original tall stone 'medieval' chimney stack. To right is double gate with stone wall on either side and swept tile roof on wooden brackets over. Interior of post office is unaltered apart from metal and glass security screen. Tudor type ribbed doors in arched heads. Moulded plaster ceiling.

A notable and virtually unaltered example of the Post Offices' willingness to design buildings to fit their historic environment. This building is one of several attempts to build in character with the two genuine C15 buildings in Glastonbury High Street. The red brick buildings in yard behind Post Office are not of special interest.
