Filoli Estate is designed by architect Willis Polk for Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers Bourn, prominent San Franciscans whose wealth derives from the Empire gold mine and Spring Valley Water Company.
1917
The extensive formal gardens, designed by Bruce Porter, are constructed.
1936
Deaths of the original owners Mr. and Mrs. Bourn.
1937
Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth, owners of the Matson Navigation Company, purchase the Filoli Estate, which they work to maintain and preserve.
1975
Mrs. Roth donates 125 acres of the Filoli Estate, which include the house and gardens, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The remaining acres are donated to Filoli Center.
1978
Filoli Mansion appears in Heaven Can Wait as the home of the rich industrialist main character played by Warren Beatty.
1981
The exterior of Filoli Mansion appears as the Carrington Estate in the opening credits of Dynasty. The interior is also used in the first few episodes, but is later reconstructed in a studio.
1993
The gardens of Filoli Mansion appear in The Joy Luck Club.
1996
Filoli Mansion appears in Bob Vila's Guide to Historic Homes of America and America's Castles: Garden Estates, both on A&E.
2001
The gardens of Filoli Mansion appear in The Wedding Planner.
