- Filoli Estate is designed by architect Willis Polk for Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers Bourn, prominent San Franciscans whose wealth derives from the Empire gold mine and Spring Valley Water Company.
- 1937
- Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth, owners of the Matson Navigation Company, purchase the Filoli Estate, which they work to maintain and preserve.
- 1975
- Mrs. Roth donates 125 acres of the Filoli Estate, which include the house and gardens, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The remaining acres are donated to Filoli Center.
- 1978
- Filoli Mansion appears in Heaven Can Wait as the home of the rich industrialist main character played by Warren Beatty.
- 1981
- The exterior of Filoli Mansion appears as the Carrington Estate in the opening credits of Dynasty. The interior is also used in the first few episodes, but is later reconstructed in a studio.
